Buzz Bingo operator – Buzz Group Limited

The history of Buzz Bingo (or rather Buzz Group) is long and a little difficult to follow because of multiple rebrands, takeovers, and other corporate restructurings that have taken place since its incentive. However, most sources concur that the original version of Buzz Bingo was, bizarrely enough, a joint venture between the long-established bookies Coral and Bass plc, which is a brewery. In the company’s early days during the 1980s, it almost exclusively operated inside Pontins holiday camps. As such, you could almost think of the first incarnation of Buzz Bingo as a night at Pontins rather than a standalone business. All of that changed when the company broke away from Coral and bought eighty bingo clubs across the UK from Thorn EMI for just over £18m in 1983. That was the first in a series of acquisitions which included all the Zetters Leisure bingo halls in 1988 and Granada’s bingo venues in 1991. The latter deal cost £147m, which was an even bigger sum in 1991 than it is now. When the Granada deal concluded, the former Coral-and-Bass branded company rebranded as Gala Clubs.

As Gala, the company bought more and more of its rivals. Seventeen large venues were purchased from Ritz in 1998. Twenty-seven of First Leisure’s Riva Bingo clubs were snapped up in 2000 for £90m. Gala set its sights higher and higher, buying casinos from The Hilton Group in 2000 and then selling off equity in the business to attract further investment. By August 2005, Gala was valued at £1.89bn. What followed was the ultimate series of dog-eat-dog moves. Gala bought Coral out from underneath in October 2005 for £2.18bn and changed the name of the business to the Gala Coral Group. At the time, it was the largest bingo operator in the UK and the third-largest bookmaker overall.

Ten years later, Gala Coral was bought by Coral’s long-time rival Ladbrokes, but Ladbrokes didn’t want the bingo clubs. That means the physical Gala Bingo halls were separated off and sold to Caledonia Investments for a mere £241m. They continued trading as Gala Bingo for three years but rebranded as Buzz Bingo that year, with the parent company becoming Buzz Group Limited. Since then, Buzz Group has changed hands again, sold by Caledonia to the Intermediate Capital Group in 2021. Today, the company operates its Buzz Bingo website plus 91 physical premises throughout the UK. It’s not what it once was – but then again, neither is the idea of going outside to play bingo in real life rather than doing it from behind a screen.

In November 2021, Buzz Group Limited was handed an official warning and ordered to pay a fine of £780,000 after an operating review found that the company had failed to adhere to licence requirements around anti-money laundering and social responsibility measures.

Withdrawal Speed and Support

The first guideline that Buzz Bingo offers around withdrawal times is that it’ll take 24-48 hours to process a withdrawal request, after which there’s a further wait of two to five working days for a withdrawal to reach a player’s account. That seems to be contradicted by the very next line on the Buzz Bingo website’s withdrawals page, which says that those who have “faster funding” enabled on their Mastercard or Visa Direct card can expect to receive their money within an hour of asking for it. No specific guidance is given with regard to PayPal or Apple Pay, even though we know the website supports both withdrawal methods. We’d like to believe it doesn’t take five days to get a PayPal withdrawal, but that seems to be what the site tells us.

Everything was going so well until we got to those vague and woolly words about withdrawals! Buzz Bingo will be a familiar name to thousands of people up and down the UK because of the familiarity of the real-world brand. It’s not quite Mecca Bingo yet, but it’s supplanted the popularity of Gala Bingo by moving into several of the old bingo halls that Gala Bingo has moved out of. The Buzz Bingo website is fairly decent. We’re not going to say it’s the best bingo site we’ve ever seen, but it has a satisfactory number of slots and games, and the level of customer support provided is very strong. For those who want a little more than bingo, Buzz Bingo also offers jackpot slots and live dealer games. It tries to cover all bases.
